The Treatments Benefit Scheme
Operated by the Department of Social and Family Affairs, the Treatments Benefit Scheme helps to provide hearing aids throughout the Republic of Ireland.
The Treatments Benefit Scheme makes a grant available to help with the cost of hearing aids. It is available for eligible people and their dependent spouses with full Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) cover, with or without holding a medical card. This includes contributory pensioners, people on an invalidity pension and also their dependent spouses. However the Treatments Benefit Scheme is not available to all classes of PRSI contributors. You can find full details on www.welfare.ie.
The grant provided by the scheme may cover up to 50% of the cost of the most appropriate hearing aid, with a maximum of €760 per hearing aid. If a binaural fitting is required, where two hearing aids are necessary, the total grant may reach €1520.
Eligible persons can claim 20% tax relief on the cost of a hearing aid purchased privately. However this cannot be claimed on any amount provided by a grant. The claim may be made on behalf of a dependent spouse or relative, but conditions apply and it is recommended that you view further details on www.revenue.ie.
The ISHAA Council occasionally meets with the Department of Social and Family Affairs with regard to the Treatments Benefit Scheme. If you would like to discuss this please feel free to contact us by phone, email or by letter.
